Husker Hype’s Gameday Predictions – Akron

Spring Game Visitors

Gameday predictions from the Husker Hype staff

We’re light staffed today so we will keep this short and sweet. For an in-depth prediction check out Pat’s Prediction and Preview from the other day where he goes into more depth on how the Huskers match up with Akron this weekend.

Derrick Stafford – Husker Cuz Cast Podcast Host

Welcome back #Team Derrick fans! It’s finally that time of the year again, my favorite time in fact, because football season is FINALLY here! You can have your Christmas, summer, Thanksgiving, spring, whatever but nothing compares to the opening weekend of football. Every team is full of optimism especially our beloved Huskers.

We have Akron on the docket this week. The Zips return 9 starters on a defense that may only have rivaled Bob Diaco’s defense last years, the big difference is they managed to snag a few interceptions.  Akron’s secondary should give Martinez his first lesson or two about college football. On the other hand, their offense features a young QB, Kato Nelson, who is capable of taking the ball and running with it, so be on the looking to see how the Husker defense holds up.

In the end, we are bigger, stronger, faster, and have the better coach so this shouldn’t be much of a contest.

Offensive MVP – RB Devine Ozigbo

Defensive MVP – S Tre Neal

Impact Newcomer – QB Adrian Martinez

Score Prediction: Nebraska 52, Akron 17

John Swedlund – Writer/Recruiting Analyst, Husker Hype

It’s that time again! Husker football is officially back and has a new whole attitude and look this fall. The Huskers will look to get the engine humming with true dual-threat quarterback Adrian Martinez today. Frost said he won’t approach how he calls the game any differently today with the lack of depth at quarterback unless they are in a situation to take their foot off the gas. Look for Adrian to hook up early and often with JD Spielman and spread the ball around to several different wide receivers.

Akron features a capable quarterback in sophomore Kato Nelson and their RPO offense compliments his with senior running back Van Edwards. At wide receiver, senior Kwadarrius Smith will get moved around a ton looking for a favorable matchup against the Husker linebackers. They are likely to try and lull the Huskers to sleep with RPO’s and quick throws before taking a shot deep or along the backside of the field.

Offensive MVP –TE Jack Stoll

Defensive MVP – DE Ben Stille

Impact Newcomer – CB Cam Taylor

Score Prediction – Nebraska 45, Akron 24

Tyler Shafer – Husker Cuz Cast Host

The Scott Frost Era officially begins this Saturday against the Zips.  Adrian Martinez will be the first true freshman to open the season as the huskers starting QB.  He will have his hands more full, because Akron is returning 9 starters on defense, including all returning starters in their secondary.  With that said, I fully expect Nebraska to try and beat Akron with a heavy dose of running the ball and a quick up-tempo game scheme.

On the other side of the ball, the “soon to be blackshirts” should have quite the advantage in this game.

A key match-up to keep an eye on is Lamar Jackson vs Kwadarrius Smith. Smith finished last season 9th in the country in yards per reception, 726 yards and 7 touchdowns.  Overall expect for this game to a one-sided affair. Nebraska’s offense may not be hitting on all cylinders yet, but the Huskers should also never really be in trouble.

Offensive MVP- RB Maurice Washington

Defensive MVP- OLB Luke Gifford

Newcomer of the game- RB Maurice Washington

Score Prediction – Nebraska 34, Akron 14
