The Nebraska Men’s basketball team released their non-conference schedule today with a solid mix of teams including several who played in 2016-17 postseason tournaments. The schedule features 8 home games at Pinnacle Bank Arena and 5 away games including trips to New York and Orlando to play in different invitationals.
The premiere matchup of the season will feature the return of Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks, for the first time since 2011, when they square off in Lincoln on December 16th at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
“Our non-conference schedule is very strong again this season,” Said Nebraska Coach Tim Miles. “We design our schedule with the idea that we want to earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament. We have great home games and challenging road games, but I’m excited to put our team to the test. I think it will prepare us well for conference play.”
Fans should be excited about the non-conference schedule as it features 5 of its 8 home games on weekends and includes at least 4 teams who qualified for the postseason play last season.
The Huskers open play on Sunday, Nov. 11th against Eastern Illinois at PBA followed by a visit from North Texas on Nov. 13th. They then head to New York for the Gavitt Tipoff Games against St. John’s before returning home to face North Dakota on Nov. 19th at the PBA.
Shortly thereafter, the team will then head to Orlando for the Advocare Invitational to face off with UCF on Nov. 23rd followed by either West Virginia/Marist on Nov 24th before finishingf the invitational on Nov 26th against a yet to be determined opponent.
The Invitational features several strong teams as UCF won 24 games last season and moved on to the semifinals in the NIT tournament. Nebraska could also run into West Virginia in the semifinals who went 28-9 last season and advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament. Other teams at the invitational include Missouri, Oregon State, St John’s, Marist, and Long Beach State.
The Huskers will then square off against Boston College at the PBA in the annual B1G/ACC Challenge on Nov. 29th.
After a short break, the Huskers will pick up with their toughest stretch of basketball with their annual trip to Omaha to face off against the Creighton Bluejays on Saturday, December 9th. A week later coach Miles welcomes Bell Self and Kansas back for arguably the premier non-conference matchup this season on Saturday, Dec 16th as part of the Shelter Insurance Showdown.
From there, the Huskers close out non-conference play with three final home games squaring off against UTSA on Dec. 20th, Delaware State on Dec. 22nd, and Stetson on Dec. 29th.
